Mars Wright: From Humble Beginnings to Bold Beauty

Mars’s story begins in the heart of Montgomery, Alabama—a place filled with history, culture, and grit. Growing up in the inner city, Mars faced the kind of odds that could either crush you or shape you into a force to be reckoned with. For her, it was the latter.

“I’ve seen struggle up close,” she recalls. “Growing up in a place where success felt capped, where survival came first, and dreams felt like luxuries, I learned early on that life wouldn’t hand me anything. I had to fight for it, envision it, and create it for myself.”

Today, Mars is a retired Army veteran, a proud mother, and the creative powerhouse behind Mars Candy Cosmetics—a makeup brand inspired by boldness, creativity, and unapologetic fun. But her journey to success wasn’t linear, nor was it easy.

A Journey Through Grit and Grace

Mars’s path was anything but ordinary. She spent years in the Army, learning discipline and resilience, skills that would later become the foundation of her entrepreneurial spirit. “The Army taught me how to adapt, how to lead, and most importantly, how to persevere when the odds aren’t in your favor,” she says.

But after retiring, Mars found herself at a crossroads. Corporate America felt stifling, and her heart craved something more—a career that would allow her to express herself creatively while making a difference. That’s when she found her calling in the beauty industry.

“I’ve always loved makeup, not just as a way to look good but as a way to feel good. It’s about self-expression, empowerment, and confidence,” she explains.

Birth of a Brand: Mars Candy Cosmetics
The idea for Mars Candy Cosmetics came to her like a spark—bold, unexpected, and impossible to ignore. Drawing from her love of playful, space-themed aesthetics and candy-inspired colors, Mars wanted to create a brand that didn’t just sell makeup but told a story.
“I wanted my brand to feel like a celebration—of creativity, individuality, and fun. Mars Candy Cosmetics is about being unapologetically you, embracing boldness, and feeling empowered in your own skin,” she says with a smile.

A Mission That Resonates

Mars’s connection to Pretty&Ghetto, a platform celebrating empowerment and authenticity, runs deep. As a Black woman who grew up in a challenging environment, she understands the importance of creating spaces where women feel seen, heard, and valued.

“Pretty&Ghetto’s mission is personal to me. Growing up in Montgomery, I know what it’s like to feel overlooked or underestimated. But I also know that where you start doesn’t define where you can go,” she shares.

For Mars, being part of this community means everything. “It’s like a breath of fresh air—a place where I can be my authentic self and connect with other women who understand the beauty and strength in our shared experiences.”

The Power of Perseverance

Mars’s journey hasn’t been without challenges. As a Black woman, she’s faced obstacles throughout her life, from being judged for her name to navigating stereotypes about professionalism and appearance. These experiences shaped her resilience and drive, fueling her determination to succeed. However, when she stepped into the beauty industry, she found it to be a welcoming space where she could fully express her creativity and connect with others who shared her passion. “The beauty industry has been a place where I’ve felt supported and inspired,” she shares, “and it’s given me the opportunity to turn my vision into reality.”

“I kept my eyes on the bigger picture,” she says. “I sought out mentorship, leaned on my community, and reminded myself that the work I’m doing matters—not just for me but for the women watching me, especially my daughter.”

Building a Legacy

For Mars, her brand is more than a business—it’s a legacy. She dreams of expanding Mars Candy Cosmetics into a global name, opening stores worldwide, and creating generational wealth for her family. But beyond financial success, she’s passionate about inspiring others.

“When my daughter watches me chase my dreams, I see the spark in her eyes. That’s my ‘why.’ I want her to know that she can dream as big as she wants and that those dreams are worth chasing.”

Advice from Mars

To women looking to start their own businesses or make bold career moves, Mars offers this heartfelt advice: “Believe in yourself, trust the process, and don’t let the outside noise dim your fire. If it’s in your heart, it’s meant for you. Stay the course, even when it’s hard. Success doesn’t happen overnight, but it’s always worth the journey.”

Looking Ahead

In five years, Mars sees herself thriving both personally and professionally. She envisions Mars Candy Cosmetics as a global phenomenon, a household name synonymous with bold, fun, and empowering beauty. She also sees herself deeply rooted in family life, raising her daughter and continuing to build a legacy of love, resilience, and inspiration.

Her ultimate goal? To leave a mark—not just in the beauty industry but in the hearts of those who dare to dream big.

“Where I started doesn’t define me,” she says. “What matters is where I’m going—and I’m just getting started.”

Mars’s story is a reminder that no matter where you come from, your dreams are valid, your voice matters, and with resilience and vision, you can create something truly extraordinary.
